Water treatment and reuse: the "fit for purpose" approach
Man has related to water for centuries considering it an inexhaustible resource.
On the one hand anthropic activities have progressively intensified (agriculture, industry, urbanization, ...), on the other hand due attention has not been paid to the quantity and quality of the water available while anthropization proceeds.
The introduction of wastewater treatment plants has certainly represented (in developed countries) a big positive change, but there is still a long way to go.
In recent years the concept of “circular economy” has appeared in the agendas, worldwide and also for water, which in nature is "circular", we can think of shifting its management from linear (take, use, treat, discharge) to circular (take, use, treat and reuse ).
In this new perspective, it is also important to review the treatment approach; the concept of "fit for purpose" is recent, i.e. treating water based on its incoming characteristics and those necessary according to the type of reuse you want to do.
