Program

The circular economy is part of the broader “green transition” perspective and aims to address environmental, economic, and social challenges while drawing inspiration from the functioning of natural ecosystems. Its ultimate goal is to foster a new societal model that is ecologically more sustainable and socially more equitable. However, achieving this goal remains a long and complex process.

Researchers in urban and regional development studies have contributed to such debates by developing parallel lines of research, with the ultimate goal of exploring geographical, social and political aspects of sustainability and circularity and their implications.

Integrating circular economy principles into urban and regional development is not a straightforward process. It requires a systematic reconsideration of the role of places, power relations, and the complexity of policy design and implementation. This module will explore the territorial dimensions of the circular economy, the dynamics of power and domination, and the potential and pitfalls of policymaking in fostering circularity.
